Vineetha Menon’s RASA: Breathing New Life into Centuries-Old Devotional Songs

With the release of RASA, Oceanside-based singer and yoga teacher Vineetha Menon invites listeners into a musical realm where ancient Indian devotion meets modern sensibilities. Drawing on the Srimad Bhagavatam, one of Hinduism’s most treasured scriptures, Menon reimagines the mystical love story of the Rasa Lila, weaving Eastern ragas and Western harmonies into a luminous tapestry of sound.

At the heart of the album lies the timeless tale from Vrindavan, where Krishna’s flute summons the Gopis into a moonlit forest for a dance that transcends time. Through each track, Menon offers a meditation on longing, surrender, and the soul’s yearning for union with the Divine, presenting these age-old narratives not as distant mythology but as living metaphors for the human search for higher love.

Many of the sacred songs on RASA carry personal significance. Some passed down from Menon’s mother and spiritual teachers, others so rare they exist only in family memory. “These songs have been my companions in joy and comfort in sorrow,” she shares. “I created this album to preserve them for future generations, to honor the saints who first sang them, and to share their profound spiritual vibrations with the world.”

Raised between Wales and India, Menon’s upbringing was steeped in devotion. Her grandfather’s home welcomed sadhus and enlightened teachers, and by the age of eight, she had already been moved to tears by kirtan’s unspoken power. Decades later, without formal vocal training but guided by what she describes as an undeniable calling, she began shaping RASA into a vessel for these sacred sounds.

Beyond the music, RASA is an extension of Menon’s service work. Through her yoga studio’s Sacred Music gatherings, she has helped provide over 15,000 meals for the underprivileged in India. This album, she hopes, will broaden that circle of compassion. “Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, the spiritual energy in these songs will reach you,” she says. “May they bring you the same peace and bliss they have given me.”

Radiant with devotional depth and a fusion of cultural traditions, RASA is more than an album; it’s an invitation to step into the eternal dance of love between the soul and the Divine.
