Manganista Returns with “Talking to Myself,” A Sharp, Synthy Reflection on Inner Chaos
San Diego’s long-running indie rock mainstay Manganista is back with a fresh shot of New Wave energy in their latest single, “Talking to Myself,” released August 15. Known for weaving rock, ska, and retro textures into their own sonic signature, the band delivers a track that’s equal parts nostalgia and modern edge; a perfect soundtrack for anyone caught in the loop of their own thoughts.

Frontman Matt Rhea found inspiration for “Talking to Myself” in a simple but telling observation: seeing people speaking to themselves on the street. The encounter sparked a deeper reflection on the line between private overthinking and public perception.
“We’ve all got this traffic jam of thoughts running through us all day, but as long as it stays inside, no one blinks,” says Rhea. “I started thinking about where that line is between what we call sane and what we call crazy.”
This theme becomes the heartbeat of the single: a sly commentary wrapped in punchy hooks, shimmering synth lines, and swaggering sax riffs.
Produced and mixed by Ben Moore, “Talking to Myself” leans into steppers beats and synth work that nods to Devo and Kraftwerk, while still feeling crisp and immediate. The track also features standout saxophone hooks from John Roy of Smoke & Mirrors Sound System, adding a brass-laced layer of energy that pushes the song toward its high-octane finale.
The result is a danceable, alt-rock anthem with enough groove to pull in fans of Oingo Boingo, The English Beat, and today’s retro-leaning indie acts.
With over two decades in the local music community, Manganista has built a reputation for staying both consistent and unpredictable; a band unafraid to experiment while keeping their roots intact. “Talking to Myself” feels like another evolution in that journey, channeling the energy of their live shows into a tightly produced studio cut.
“Talking to Myself” is now streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and all major platforms.
